The infrastructure used for the delivery of alert data messages, and the notification appliance,
are ideally suited to a variety of other short messaging purposes.
Additionally, features can be built into notification appliances to support electrical utilities
identification of locations without service. Today, electrical utilities are dependent on customer
complaints to determine the scale of a service outage, and the appropriate service response.
Tomorrow, they could proactively identify locations without electricity and respond appropriately.

The alert data messages are transmitted using signals very
similar to that used for Calling Line Identification, voicemail
Visual Message Waiting Indication, and Analog Display Services
Interface. For the convenience of the solution user, some
or all of these features will be included in most standalone
notification appliance adjuncts and telephones.
